New research has revealed that over a quarter of Brits don’t have a carbon monoxide detector in their home, reports the Wakefield Express. Known as the ‘silent killer’, carbon monoxide is responsible for around 60 deaths a year in the UK, with thousands more ending up needing hospitalisation.
The research from BestHeating also revealed that 26 per cent of Brits cannot identify the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning, of which the six main symptoms are:
- Tension-type headache
- Nausea and vomiting
- Breathlessness
- Dizziness
- Erratic behaviour
- General lethargy and confusion
Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless, and toxic gas, which can’t be seen, heard, smelled, or tasted. Anyone can be at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, but some, such as the old and very young, and those with chronic heart and respiratory conditions are more vulnerable.
Carbon monoxide is produced by the incomplete burning of carbon-based fuels and can be caused by open fires, cookers, boilers, burning fuel in unventilated spaces, barbecues, blocked flues and chimneys, and even by smoking shisha pipes indoors.
It’s urged that everyone ensures that they purchase a carbon monoxide detector, and to be aware of the symptoms brought on by carbon monoxide poisoning.
The top tips to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning are:
- Make sure you have a carbon monoxide detector in your home
- Have your chimney swept at least once a year by a qualified chimney sweep
- Have your central heating inspected at least once a year
- If you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning immediately leave the affected area and call a gas emergency on 0800 111 999. If you feel very unwell seek urgent medical advice by calling 999.
