It’s that time of year again, when the temperatures start to fall and we turn on our heating. If you’re lucky enough to have a burner or open fire in your property you might be lighting it soon. But before you do, consider when you last had your chimney swept.
The Melton Times recently shared a warning issued by Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service, after they were called to a chimney fire in Syston.
They want all households with a working open fire or log burner to make sure they call in a chimney sweep before lighting a fire in their hearth.
In the case the firefighters attended, they removed a host of debris from the chimney. This included bird nests and they revealed that they cleared bucket loads of debris from the house.
If you haven’t yet booked your appointment with a chimney sweep in Henley, or wherever you live, now is the time to do so.
A spokesperson for the fire service said that everyone should “make sure their boilers are serviced and chimneys are checked and swept in order to prevent any safety issues”.
Country Living also recently stressed the importance of cleaning your chimney regularly, noting that this is essential to stay safe in the winter months.
The publication explained that you should arrange for a chimney sweep to come to your home at least once a year.
It also pointed out that this isn’t a task you should attempt yourself as you need special equipment like chimney brushes and will have to take precautions to keep the inside of your home clean.
